You know those cheap (but very useful) plastic planters that are made to look like they are good ol’ terra cotta pots? The ones that seriously cost like $0.98 at the store? Yep – you know! I have one that has been hanging around the house for a long time. It has a lovely plant in it that i have had for sixteen or so years — yes — really! Well, since I seem to be motivated to get things updated lately, this is one project I thought I could tackle relatively quickly!
Here is my before picture: one plain old plastic pot.
Faux terra cotta style!
I began by placing my pot and plant on a lazy susan in my craft room – so that I could spin it around and get all the angles. I have to say, that really worked great! (if you don’t have a lazy susan in your craft room, I highly suggest it!) I used Folk Art paints to achieve a ‘weathered’ look. The painting started with camel color – using just a foam brush, I made sweeping strokes. Once that color dried, I went onto Titanium White, Folk Art paints. I still used the foam brush and sweeping strokes. The final layer was using Folk Arts Silver Sterling. I really just ‘eyed’ where I thought the colors ought to go. In the end, I think it looks quite weathered.
I wanted to hang my planter from the ceiling in my family room, so I bought some Country Loom yarn in Nobility because it had some character to it, it wasn’t very stretchy and the color compliments well with the room. I wanted to try my hand at some macrame – but didn’t have the right cord or knowledge in knot tying – I guess I will leave that lesson for another blog. So -I took some macrame inspiration and just did my own knots and connecting of yarn to come up with a fun and funky plant hanger. I had fun with this project! Hope you enjoy it too!
