Making fall decorations (or any decorations) for my home is something I really enjoy! I enjoy it more when it is easy to do and doesn’t cost a lot! This DIY Stacked Pumpkin Decoration is both easy and inexpensive. I just love the pops of orange that pumpkins and fall leaves bring this time of year.

You will need very few supplies for this project:
- Three Craft Pumpkins – each a different size
- A strand of fall leaf garland of your choice
- A hot glue gun (with glue!)
- A Dremel, saw or exact-o knife with which to cut the pumpkins
- <Optional> A dowel – I used this to ‘plant’ my pumpkin stack in my front porch pot
When trying to keep the costs down on this project, look for the craft pumpkins and fall garland on sale at craft stores. This is the time of year that the prices on these decorative items are crazy cheap! I think my pumpkins were 70% off and I used a 50% off coupon for the fall garland. I already own the hot glue gun and the Dremel (score) and the dowel was less than one dollar at the local hardware store!
If you shop online, you can also receive cash back at most stores while you shop online. See my information about ebates here.
Stacking the Pumpkins
My DIY Stacked Pumpkins are in order from largest to smallest. I made them so that they would sit snuggly on top of each other by cutting the bottoms out of the two smaller pumpkins, just enough so that they fit nicely on top of each other. This is kind-of a trial and error process. Look at the top of the pumpkin you will be stacking your pumpkin on top of and estimate how much you will need to cut out. Then, start cutting! If you need to cut more, you can! Dry stack them on top of each-other and see how they fit. Once you are happy with how they stack, it is time to turn the hot glue gun on.
Place a generous amount of hot glue on the bottom of the cut pumpkin, or the top of the pumpkin that it will be stacked on. Starting with the biggest pumpkin and the middle pumpkin is the easiest way to manage the pumpkins, in my estimation. Once those are securely glued together, do the same glue technique with the smallest, and top pumpkin. Let the glue cool really well before continuing to the next step.
Adding the Garland
Adding the garland really spruces up this DIY Stacked Pumpkin Decoration! It is so easy! I started the garland at the top of the small pumpkin, using a straight pin to start. I also added hot glue in the same place as the straight pin. Then, wrap the fall leaf garland around all three pumpkins until you are happy with the look. Add spots of hot glue to different areas of the garland so that it stays in place where you like it. Finish by tucking the end of the garland under the bottom of the biggest pumpkin, and add more hot glue to secure it.
Optional – Dowel
I added this optional step because I put my DIY Stacked Pumpkin Decoration outside on my front porch, on a very large planter that I am not able to move during the winter because of its size! DIY Stacked Pumpkins look so much nicer than dead plants!! I cut a hole in the bottom of the largest pumpkin very similar to the size of the dowel diameter. It stuck the dowel inside the pumpkin as far as it would go, and then added lots of hot glue where the dowel and the pumpkin meet. This basically created a steak that I could set into the dirt of my front porch pot so that the pumpkins would not get swept away by the wind! .
