Birthdays, when you are a kid, are the BEST. I mean, you can’t beat them. Having a party with all your friends and family, getting to act crazy AND eat cake…. it is awesome! So, when my nephew was about to turn 8 years old and was asking for a chocolate Lego cake, I immediately volunteered! What a FUN cake to create!!
And then, I found out that I needed to make a cake for forty people! Just a little bit bigger of a challenge! There are some BEAUTIFUL Lego cakes on Pinterest, but none that would feed a crowd! As I was digging around for amazing cakes and Lego themes, I settled on combining two different ideas:
1. Make a chocolate Texas sheet cake
2. Make chocolate ‘Legos’ in different colors to top the cake
The Chocolate Cake
Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman, has my favorite recipe for Texas Sheet Cake. I used her recipe for both the cake and the frosting (minus the nuts). Using this recipe, we fed 40 people cake (and ice cream) and had a couple of pieces left!
Ok, now to figure out the Legos…..
Amazon.com has an awesome set of silicone Lego molds that are completely affordable! I used Ghirardelli White Chocolate Melting Wafers to fill the molds and Wilton Icing Colors to tint the ‘Legos’.

The Legos
After I had the molds, the chocolate and the icing colors, it was easy!! First, wash the molds in warm soapy water. Let them dry completely!! You don’t want any water in them – and they have lots of nooks and crannies! When they are dry, spray them well with a non-stick spray. I used trusty Pam vegetable spray. Follow the melting directions on the package of the chocolate. And have a few bowls near by to mix colors. When the chocolate is melted, spoon about 1/4 of it into a clean bowl. Add one color to this bowl and mix well. Keep adding the same color until you are happy with the resulting color. Continue this with different bowls for different colors to make colored Lego bricks and men. I ended up using 4 bags of the Ghirardelli white chocolates to make all the bricks you see in the photos.
When you have the color you like, pour it into a zip-lock bag. Then, snip a corner of the bag (very small hole) and use the hole to pour the melted chocolate into the Lego molds. Do this with a clean bag for each color. When you have used all your melted chocolate, tap each silicone tray several times to get the air bubbles out. It helps to pick the tray up off the counter an inch or so and gently drop it on the counter several times. It is amazing how many bubbles rise to the top!
After the bubbles are out, let the chocolate harden. If you are not in a rush, just let it sit on the counter for several hours. I needed mine to cool off quickly, so I put them in the fridge for an hour. When the chocolate has hardened, gently pop the Lego bricks and men out of the molds. They come out fairly easy – and the molds can be twisted and turned inside out to help the process.
Use them to decorate your cake any way you want! I just made a big pile of Lego’s, so that when we served up the cake, we could give each kid a Lego with their cake and ice cream! Also, I spelled out ‘Ty’ with Lego’s because it was his birthday! So, have fun decorating~ leave me a comment and a picture so I can see your creation!

What a cute idea! I had a Lego cake made for my son back in the day. The bakery used stacked cake to make the brick with three cup cakes on top to make the pegs. It was very cute but I like your idea about using molded candy so that everyone got their own Lego piece.
